Suomen FSC-standardin kehittämisestä syntyi sopimus
Suomen FSC-yhdistys ja metsäteollisuus sopivat Suomen FSC standardin kehittämisprosessista, jonka määräaika on helmikuun 2008 loppuun mennessä. Sopimus kuuden kuukauden prosessista syntyi kansainvälisen FSC:n puheenjohtajan Heiko Liedekerin johtamassa kokouksessa elokuussa 2007.
Prosessin tarkoituksena on kehittää Suomen FSC-standardia metsä- ja ympäristöalan sidosryhmien odotukset huomioiden ja täyttää kansainvälisen FSC:n asettamat akkreditointiehdot ja suositukset. Prosessille nimitettiin neljän hengen ohjausryhmä, jossa on edustajia Suomen FSC-yhdistyksestä ja metsäteollisuudesta. Varsinainen kehittämistyö tehdään neljässä työparissa, jotka käsittelevät FSC-standardia oman erityisalansa osalta. FSC-yhdistyksen jäseniä sekä metsäalan tärkeiden sidosryhmien näkemyksiä kuullaan ja huomioidaan kehittämistyössä. Asiantuntijat ja ohjausryhmä tekevät tiivistä yhteistyötä Suomen FSC-yhdistyksen kanssa, jolle prosessin tulokset toimitetaan hyväksyttäväksi. Työn etenemisestä tiedotetaan tarvittaessa.

5TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY - SOUTH AFRICA, 2008 SAVE THE DATE
FSC invites all its members to save the date for the next FSC General Assembly (GA). The fifth FSC General Assembly will convene in Cape Town, South Africa from November 5-7, 2008. Furthermore, it is a great opportunity to celebrate 15 years of achievements in improving forest management practices worldwide.

FSC BOARD OF DIRECTORS APPROVE GLOBAL STRATEGY GUIDING FSC THROUGH UPCOMING OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Earlier this month, the FSC Board of Directors approved FSC's Global Strategy which will guide the organization though the next critical phase of its development. The document is currently being prepared for publishing and will be available in the coming weeks. In addition to printed copies, English and Spanish versions will be available on the FSC website www.fsc.org

PLANTATIONS TECHNICAL PHASE BEGINS EXPERT TEAMS APPROVED BY FSC BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The technical phase of the Plantations Review has begun with the approval by the FSC Board of Directors of 18 professionals who will be working in four Expert Teams on specific issues.
The teams will also provide input to the working group of the FSC Principles and Criteria review as recommendations related to plantations issues. Furthermore, FSC has hired a new Policy Officer, Matthias Fetch, who will facilitate and support this phase of the Review.

FSC: A TOOL FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION SUPPORT FOR FSC AT LANDMARK CONFERENCE
Responsible forest management through FSC certification can offer long-term economic, environmental and social benefits for the rural poor. Alan Smith, FSC Social Strategy Program Manager, joined some 350 experts in Bangkok for a landmark conference on Asia's diminishing forests, examining current efforts to reduce poverty through sustainable management of forests.

ASSESSING FSC'S IMPACT ON THE GROUND MEETING WITH DUTCH RESEARCHERS MARK BEGINNING OF FSC'S IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROGRAM
How is FSC delivering against its mission? What impacts did FSC certification make for the forests and the people? What lessons can be learned from FSC's performance so far? And how can the FSC system be further improved? Numerous case studies and reports from around the globe provide accounts and snap shots of environmental, social and economic benefits of FSC certification. But to conclusively measure FSC's global impacts is a complex task.

The Board of Directors of FSC Canada announced Tembec Inc. as the winner of the FSC Winds of Change Award 2007. The award recognizes the exceptional contributions to safeguarding the future of our forests and all who depend upon them.

FSC GROWTH IN JAPAN MITSUBISHI PAPER MILLS LEAD RESPONSIBLE PAPER SECTOR IN JAPAN
FSC certification is growing in Japan following its first forest management certificate in 2000. Currently, 22 forest management units are certified according to FSC's high social and environmental standards, covering a total area of 126,701 hectares of forestland. One certificate holder consists of 120 groups, representing 3643 forest owners. Most of the 515 FSC chain of custody certificates are in the paper sector and Mitsubishi Paper Mills Ltd. (MPM) is one of the forerunners.
